What is good program, but free to edit images that lets you make the image black and white, but you can select multiple areas, not black and white?

    Picasa has decent image enhancements, but not what you are asking. That one is probably exists only in commercial product. You can download Adobe Photoshop Elements or Corel Paint Shop product evaluation versions for doing it.

    for pain free quick improvements i use picassa doubt it can do what you want though. if your looking for a very powerful and complex editor you should try "the gimp" available for windows its free (as is picassa from google) there is also a very comprehensive manual free to download or you can buy it in paper form. you'll have to do a search for it i'm afraid as i don't have the links to hand. if i find them and remember i'll add them here.
