How Come When I Cook Chicken The Bread Crumbs Burn But The Chicken Doesn’t Cook Enough?

I am preparing a recipe from Betty Crocker, the chicken farm, and when I cook over medium heat, (purchased) breadcrumbs burn but the chicken is cooked. To be * really * a novice cook, I'm going crazy because the crumbs are black, but inside the chicken is not cooked at all! What? What am I doing wrong? Do I rolled the chicken?
