Virtualisation and Green IT

Green IT is becoming more and more important in the business world, and for several main reasons. These reasons are of significance to varying sets of people, from the company to the government, and to the public itself – meaning that any steps your company takes towards becoming a more environmentally-friendly organisation are bound to be good.

Firstly, the various initiatives taken up by the government have led to a new set of regulations cropping up that mean businesses in the UK must adhere to a certain level of eco-friendliness by 2020. The current alarm surrounding our carbon footprints have spurred such projects on and soon it will be a legal requirement to maintain a certain level of green practices at your businesses – which is why it’s a good idea to start early.

From a business point of view, the main temptation for going green is as simple as it is a powerful pull – it’s low cost! When you do everything you can to up your energy efficiency in the office and in data centres, the savings pile in. Your energy bills slash and, with the use of technologies like virtualisation and cloud computing – both known for being fantastic for eco-practices – you can also switch off more servers or cut down on buying them completely. Virtualisation involves stacking your servers virtually rather than by using physical machines. By doing so, you can make one server do the work of several and make the most of reducing server space, increasing functionality and cutting down on energy bills. By using just one or a few servers and switching between virtual servers on each one, you can quickly, easily and efficiently increase the green credentials of your data centre – while making it simpler for your IT department to manage and run the machines.

Finally, the public have a strong opinion in favour of ecologically-friendly practices. The talk about carbon footprints and global warming has caused the public to become more ethical when choosing which companies they will purchase goods or services from, meaning that if your company is seen as being ethically sound, more customers are likely to choose you when shopping around.

Going green is an admirable idea for many reasons: to conform to regulations, to save space and money and to raise your company’s profile. And with services like virtualisation hosting, it’s really not as difficult as you might think.
